The man, Jason Pullman, tells Luna he is Sam and Polly’s dad.
He explains that he tried to put Polly out of their misery by suffocating her with a pillow but he lost his heart halfway through.
The partial suffocation left her brain damaged and in a toddlerlike state.
He did the same to Sam in the bath the next night.
He explained that he seemed to have stopped them understanding what was happening in the world so he partly got his wish of keeping them ignorant to how brutal the world had become.
He tells Luna he did what he did because he loves Sam and Polly.
But that is time he let them go.
Luna understands and kills Polly.
Pullman holds Polly while she dies.
He explains she never slept a full night after what he did, so Sam suggested having a doll watch her while she slept to keep her safe.
Pullman asks her to kill Sam for her too as he doesn’t want to see him die too.
Pullman kills himself with a shard of mirror.
Luna watches in horror as Polly and her father bleed out, then remembers Sam is on his own in the kitchen.
She tells him his dad and sister are dolls now.
